Sick as a dog

Do dogs really get sick that much? When they do, is it particularly dramatic or significant? Or do the words just have a nice ring to them? I suppose it's more catchy than "sick as a toucan."

Yes, I am the sick. Virus. Caught it from the girlfriend. Had the vomitation earlier. Fever. Lower back pain. I think I'm having a hot flash now.
